Generation Mining has secured the final provincial permit required to commence construction of its Marathon copper-palladium open-pit mine near Lake Superior. The Environmental Compliance Approval for industrial sewage works, issued by Ontario’s Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks, authorizes water management and discharge during the construction phase. This milestone completes the regulatory process, positioning the project for development.
Despite being “shovel ready,” the company has not yet made a final construction decision, pending the acquisition of full project financing. To date, Generation Mining has secured approximately $800 million through a combination of debt facilities and a $200 million streaming agreement with Wheaton Precious Metals. Additionally, a support letter from an undisclosed Canadian lender indicates potential interest in providing up to $200 million, bringing the company closer to its $961 million capital requirement.
The Marathon Project, Generation Mining’s sole asset, encompasses a 26,000-hectare land package located 10 kilometers north of the town of Marathon. Acquired from Sibanye-Stillwater in 2019, the project has undergone extensive environmental assessments over the past decade. Once operational, the mine is expected to create 1,200 construction jobs and 400 full-time positions, contributing significantly to the local economy and Canada’s critical minerals supply chain.
