Ontario has introduced a new permitting framework called “One Project, One Process” to streamline approvals for advanced exploration and mining development. The policy aims to consolidate multiple approval streams across ministries and agencies into a single, coordinated process. It is intended to cut regulatory delays, reduce duplication, and set binding service standards for reviews.
Under the new approach, projects that qualify will have a dedicated Mine Authorization and Permitting Delivery Team to manage and coordinate all required reviews. The goal is to deliver all necessary approvals within 24 months, significantly faster than the current system. The government asserts this will help Ontario compete globally for mining investment, especially in strategic regions like the Ring of Fire.
While speed is a major focus, the policy maintains that environmental protection and Indigenous consultation requirements remain integral to decision-making. Proponents must still meet legal obligations around duty to consult, impact assessments, and environmental safeguards.
“One Project, One Process” is part of broader legislation the province rolled out via the Protect Ontario by Unleashing Our Economy Act, intended to support economic growth, resource development, and sovereignty over critical minerals. The changes are seen as an effort to make Ontario more attractive to capital in mining and resources while seeking more predictable timelines for developers.
