Canada Nickel Company Inc. reported successful completion of an in-situ carbon sequestration pilot at its Crawford Nickel Project near Timmins, Ontario, conducted with a research team led by the University of Texas at Austin under United States Department of Energy ARPA-E funding. The field test injected carbon-enriched fluid into ultramafic host rock to assess permanent mineral storage of carbon dioxide within the deposit. The pilot sequestered 12 tonnes of carbon dioxide and demonstrated a storage pathway distinct from Canada Nickel’s IPT Carbonation and NetCarb processes. The work supports the company’s broader strategy to integrate carbon storage into development of the Crawford project and advance low-carbon nickel production concepts. Crawford’s geology naturally reacts with carbon dioxide to form stable carbonate minerals, providing long-term sequestration potential. Canada Nickel stated that results from the pilot confirm the technical viability of in-situ mineral carbonation within the deposit and add another option for future carbon management at the project. The company continues to assess carbon capture methods alongside engineering and permitting activities for Crawford, which remains its flagship nickel sulphide development asset in northeastern Ontario.
