Volta Metals Ltd. is testing a bioleaching extraction process on mineralized material from its Springer rare earth and gallium deposit near Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, in collaboration with Laurentian University in Sudbury. The work is being led by biochemist Dr. Vasu Appanna, whose research focuses on microbial metal recovery systems. The program evaluates whether bacteria-based leaching methods can extract gallium and rare earth elements from Springer mineralization using non-invasive reagents. The testing forms part of broader metallurgical work to determine viable recovery pathways for critical minerals at the deposit. Initial laboratory work has already demonstrated that bio-enabled systems can liberate gallium and several rare earth elements into solution from representative Springer samples. The process combines microbial action with environmentally compatible chemical media and selective recovery columns. If results continue to be positive, the research may advance toward larger-scale validation studies to assess potential application at deposit scale. Volta Metals acquired the Springer project to target critical minerals including gallium and rare earth elements and is working to define both mineralization and extraction approaches. The bioleaching program represents an early-stage metallurgical assessment of low-impact recovery options for the Sturgeon Falls deposit.
